Recently, Nurul and Me finally went to catch ‘I am Legend‘ at Shaw Princess, near Bugis. I have been wanting to catch it for such a long time and was so happy to finally catch it. I have been so looking forward to it as the sneak peaks was indeed enticing especially the part when it states, 6pm………. Survive! He he.
The movie is based on a novel written by Richard Matheson in 1954. Basically the movie follows the novel but has a happy ending unlike the novel. There have been other adaptations like Omega Man (Charlton Heston) and The Last Man on Earth.
The movie begins with the one and only FRESH PRINCE OF BELL AIR, my man, the ever awesome, WILL SMITH! From a string of Sci Fi movies and fresh from the feel good eye opener movie The Pursuit of Happyness, he is back with a bigger and toned body for this Sci Fi thriller.
Will Smith is Lt. Col. Robert Neville, a military researcher who is the Last Man living in New York. The movie goes about showing him surviving, collecting food and supplies, making small talk with dummies (HAha!) and pouring his love to his one true friend, Samantha (his dog). The world has been wiped out by the miracle cancer drug KV that has a side effect of causing people to turn into mindless zombies hell-bent on one thing, Blood. Will is immune to the virus but can’t understand why he is unable to give his immunity to cure the infected. The movie goes about on surviving in a deserted New York and finding a cure for the infected.
Touching scenes was his love for his dog, Sam, having a somewhat human (father-daughter) bonding and it truly affects us to see Sam finally turning into the infected (eventually being killed by Will Smith’s own hands). It shows the trials to maintain one’s emotions and mind. Losing his dear friend cracked him as he finally decided to go for a Suicide option, kill as many infected as possible. However, our hero is saved only for his fortress to be bombarded by the infected the next day. The ending is a little cliche but still nice as it brings about God’s Plans for humans and giving hope for man (unlike most Zombie movies).
It is a good movie and the story plot though can be seen from a mile away is still touching. Will Smith acting is as superb as ever though questions arise about the infected. Especially when he states that the infected are de-evolving, not caring for one’s survival when it was indeed otherwise (they had the ability to learn, attack in packs, use Will’s tricks against him and had emotions for each other.)
Ratings
Storyline : 3/5
Visual Effects : 3/5 (They were decent but i expected scarier looking zombies)
Overall : 3.5/5
Watchable, although show lacks originality, Will Smith saves another movie yet again in style. Wished they had followed the original book more though. Just a thought.
Anyone wanna read more about the book can look it up here.
