Well, Nurul and I were supposed to head on down to the Portobello Market Singaporean Style. Unfortunately, it rained heavily so we decided to watch the movie i was really looking forward to.
SWEENEY TODD!
Well i have heard of it as a musical thus i was really waiting for it. Also, Johnny Depp was it’s main star with the ever sinister alluring Helena Bonham Carter. To me, it’s a guaranteed must watch. I have known Johnny Depp since the days of Nightmare in Elm’s Street where he was eaten by his own bed (Go figure!) A brilliant actor and am happy that he finally shook off his supporting role to spearhead as leading role in movies nowadays. One who is forever eccentric with his many colourful roles ranging from Edward’s Scissorshand, Willy Wonka, Captain Jack Sparrow and finally the sinister barber Sweeney Todd.
A film by Tim Burton, it’s a dark sinister movie with a somewhat devilish ironic twist in the ending. The mis-en-scene or plainly the scene, setting, lighting, characters paint a gloomy picture of London. It’s indeed beautifully done as its starts with two entirely different songs of London; one filled with hope and another filled with despair. I guess it follows the law of attraction as the character’s come to the same ends as their song.
Basically, Sweeney Todd is about a barber that was wrongfully accused of a crime which he did not commit. Exiled and left for ruins, he returns back to get his revenge and hopefully to see his loving wife and beautiful daughter. Unfortunately, that is where things go downhill especially when he returns to his old barber shop to meet Helena Bonham Carter who sells pies. I won’t spoil anything just to assure our readers that it’s a dark movie painted poetically as one of Shakespeare’s novels.
Don’t be fooled by the trailer as it’s not a typical horror flick. It is a musical that deals with many heartfelt human drama, what does a man do when the family he has is lost. Warning : Ready to expect lots of blood, gore and especially the slitting of throats.
Ratings:-
Special Effects : 2/5 ( Honestly, the blood looks super fake and indeed comical.)
Storyline : 5/5 (Brilliant, a poignant story one that touches your soul)
Music: 4/5 (Johnny Depp can sing though don’t think he is gonna make an album)
Overall: 4.5/5 (One of the best movies for this year, after Rambo IV that is)

Dude, you gave special effects a 2 out of 5 for Sweeney Todd! You should be BANISHED for that! How can you insult tim burtons bloodwork. Look at his shadow work through the entire movie, his shots depicted contrast so well between dark and bright days.
And the blood work, it would have been boring to see real blood, i’m glad he used such a texture and effect. Look at other brilliant directors, Quentin Tarantino.. in Kill Bill… so I think overall this musical was a stroke of genius yet again! Tim Burton his pure genius..
If i were you i’d change that to a 4.5.
Hey Marv,
Hmm, i didn’t count shadow work as special effects though i have to agree the shadow work was brilliant. However, it is seen to the same effects in other Johnny Depp movies like Sleepy Hollow & From Hell thus i wasn’t impressed with it . The other special effects was when Helena Bonham Carter was burning. Now that was nice. I didn’t like the blood effects in Kill Bill. Haha. To me, blood has to be blood. Either in the dark venous blood or the rich red arterial blood. Other forms just seem to be comical as a slapstick B grade horror movie.
