After much deliberation with decisions being implemented and retracted back, it is without much amazement that Prime Minister of Malaysia Abdullah Badawi has given the clearest and strongest statement.
The Malaysian Government announced yesterday an increase in petrol and diesel prices, stating that it can no longer continue to subsidise fuel.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the new prices were still at a 30-sen per litre discount from market prices.

Petrol price up by 78 sen – and will be reviewed monthly
Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said
“Since the price of fuel has risen and the Government has restructured the subsidy system, the ban is no longer necessary. This is because only Malaysians can enjoy rebates, which they will get when renewing their road tax. There is no question about foreign-registered cars enjoying the subsidy anymore. The ban has been lifted.”
Finally, a clear picture. One that ensures both sides; Singapore & Malaysia to win. I can go about with my weekly shopping & dining at JB without fuel worries, Petrol Station Owners will be happy to continue selling their petrol, the Malaysian Government will save a whooping RM$13.7 billion.
Alas, the citizens are the ones that now have to face the harsh realities of the economic world thanks to elevating oil prices. I guess this is the best solution as the continuance of oil subsidies is indeed a great pamperment. Besides, why should the Government provide a subsidy to a person who is able to buy an oil guzzler Mazda RX8 (7km a litre) or a Mercedes. If they really wanna save money, get a cheaper & more economical car like a Kancil (24km a litre). Furthermore, the Government will be providing rebates to all motorists.
Praise to PM Abdullah to having the guts and vision to remove this pointless subsidy (it will be totally removed in August). I am amazed by this strong action as I would have believed he wouldn’t want to make an unpopular decision during this political upheaval. However, this proves that he is thinking not for himself, but for the benefit of the Nation. Indeed, I view him in a better light as he is able to make a tough decision in tough times. Hopefully, he will be able to solve the many other problems in Malaysia. Could he be the new Dawn that Anwar was talking about?
