The Cathay to many seems like a sleepy dull place. Somewhat like a white elephant or a “Buangkok” of Orchard Road where there are few shops and people only head there for movies. I still remember the Old Cathay with it’s big flashy hand painted Cinema Posters, a somewhat retro memory of the yesteryears especially a soft spot for Changi Cinema at Bedok.
However, it’s all a facade as The Cathay near Plaza Singapura indeed holds many unknown and unique shops with products that will attract any niche market. Nurul & I were there to catch Penelope (Starring the ever dark & hot Christina Ricci & Hollywoods current hot new star James McAvoy). A delightful movie with a twist of fairytales.
After the movie, we were just roaming around the mall and amazingly there is indeed a wide variety of shops ranging from cyber cafe, restaurants, eateries music store, fashion shops, design studios, unique and indie boutiques, Ben & Jerry’s, Starbucks & finally WhatHe Wants.

WhatHe Wants
It is an evolutionary grooming store made solely for Men. Indeed, the concept has been playing around in my head for quite sometime and i am happy that there is such a shop in Singapore. WhatHe Wants brings together exclusive products from around the world that suit the needs of men in Singapore. Whether in pursuit of the ideal shaving cream, hair product, facial moisturizer or fragrance, a visit to WhatHeWants is in order to discover a carefully selected range of products that reflect modern man’s ideals and attitudes towards grooming.
Women have always known what to get for their grooming products. All they have to do is dabble around with the sample, chat a lil with the sales assistant & PRESTO! They know what to get for their grooming needs. For Men however, it’s either we have girlfriends to help us in this department or we simply just avoid the notion of grooming (Deeming it as too metro! Haha!)
The wide range of Men’s products was impressive with special mention of reknowned brands like Zirh, Men-U & Lab Series that specialise their products for Men’s skin. The store is designed brilliantly as the open decor concept enable’s you to identify and meddle around with all the products (Reminiscene of the Body Shop marketing style). But it wasn’t the wide array of Men’s products or the design of the shop that i fancied most. It was the service!
The service was excellent as the staff (Unfortunately, i can’t remember their names) went to extreme lengths to aid me. Honestly, i had no idea of buying anything but to simply look around. They dutifully answered all of my questions ranging from ingredients to application and even favoured brands among customers. Not pushy at all, they presented the promotional items and even gave tips and reccomendations for application and identifying my skin problems.
For all the Men out there (single & attached ones) who would like to get help for their daily grooming needs, either ranging from shaving creams, deodorants, perfumes & especially facial products, Have no fear for there is WhatHeWants to cater to your needs. Head on down to their outlets at either The Cathay or their brand new store at Suntec City. Tho, if i were you, i will certainly head to the friendly staff at the Cathay.
