Singapore Grand Prix 2008

WHAT A RACE INDEED! Bravo to Fernando Alonso and Team Renault for producing a spectacular and efficient race to trump top rivals McClaren & Ferrari. Special words of praise to Singapore too for producing a magnificent race filled with action, speed and style. Indeed, the best and toughest race in the whole F1 calendar this year.

It was perceived to be a tight race between Felipe Massa & Lewis Hamilton after the qualifying race last night. However, while watching the qualifying laps last night, my heart and eyes were telling me that everyone wasn’t comfortable with the bumpy and tight course. Except for one man, Alonso. I was watching how nimble he was as he drove cleanly around the course. Unfortunately for him, he had to crash that allayed all hopes for him to win. Or so it was perceived. I guess no one expected the amount of mayhem and spectacle that shall ever be remembered for the F1′e ever first night race, the debutant Singapore Grand Prix.

It began as according to plan with Massa and Hamilton leading the pack. However, things started to change once the safety car came out. That was caused by Nelson Piquet, fellow Alonso’s Renault team mate, metal crunching crash into the wall after a rough spin from a turn. Things also changed for the worst for Massa as during a routine pit stop, a malfunction occured with the mechanical stop sign. Ferrari has stopped emplying a dolly, a person that is assigned to inform the driver when he is able to leave the pit stop. Unfortunately, the board showed green lights and Massa immediately moved off, along with the fuel pump which nearly beheaded and dragged a couple of the pit crew. Indeed, such bad luck that in the end caused Massa to be right at the back of the race.

Such untimely sequence of events led to Fernando Alonso slowly climbing from 15th place till number one.  The next big crash was when Suntil with Force India crashed into the walll trying to evade a head on collision with Massa who had spinned off the track. And tragedy struck Ferrari once again, after their  spate of good luck yesterday, as Kimi Raikkonen with 4 laps to go completely mistimed his turning and bumped off a kerb to smash into a wall. The Singapore Grand Prix really turned out to be an unlucky course indeed for Ferrari. The race still was a tense and topsy race as the tight street corners proved to be quite a rough ride. Hamilton himself commented that the Singapore Grand Prix is “the most challenging course” among all the courses. It proved to be mentally and physically taxing as drivers battled out the humidity and tought terrain.

Well, the race ended with Fernando Alonso (Renault) claiming 1st position followed by Nico Rosberg (BMW Sauber) and 3rd with Lewis Hamilton (McClaren). Hamilton will be happy indeed as he gains his 7 point gap between himself and Felipe Massa. The next three races will be very interesting. Certainly thanks to Singapore for having a spectacular and memorable night race. Stlye, class and elegance.
