Confessions of a Shopaholic

The movie Confessions of a Shopaholic opens this week here in Singapore and I’ve the privilege to actually catch it recently. The movie is hilarious and deep down inside most women can associate themselves to Rebecca Bloomwood. Not the compulsive shopping disorder part but the passion for shopping. Even from a very young age women loves shopping. I do.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

I am so happy that we live here in Singapore. A shopping haven in South East Asia. Eventhough we get sales almost on a regular basis, the sales here truthfully sucks. So it’s much easier to control our shopping needs. However, unlike the girl in the green scarf, shopping in the US is heavenly and it’s hard for you to control your shopping habits. For those of you who have never set foot in the US, you won’t know what I’m talking about.

The US, is the shopping capital of the world, with Macy’s and Walmart. Yes! I said Walmart. Finding aisle long drug store makeup brands like Maybelline and CoverGirl at less than US$10 (even after converting to SGD, its cheaper there) makes us girls or women on a beauty budget very esctatic. Apart from Walmart, stepping into Victoria Secret’s (VS) will drive you crazy.

In the States, VS gives incredible offers for their body sprays. $30 for 6 bottles (that’s $5 each). I personally end up lugging about a dozen of those back to Singapore. Here, they go at SG$35 per bottle. Can I say rip-off?! Then, you’ve got outlet stores like Levi’s, with jeans going at US$15.99. How can someone simply not go crazy shopping in the US. Oh, not to mention you can get Coach bags at extremely discounted price.

Which is why I tell you, we’re much more fortunate here in Singapore. Sales here sucks and it somehow actually helped me with my shopping. But still, I am guilty of sometimes splurging and spending way off my budget. ;)

Nevertheless, Confessions of a Shopaholic is hilarious and has a very valuable financial lesson apt for the current recession. Shopping is fun but credit is EVIL! So, shop wisely. :D
